Maybe it’s the proximity to water, or the distinctly Mediterranean vibe you get, but there’s something about Sausalito that makes everyone want seafood. From fresh catches to sushi, fish and chips to fish tacos, people love to enjoy those flavors of the nearby Pacific while exploring my favorite seaside town – and I am one of those people too.
Fish tacos are one of my favorite seafood dishes, as I love Mexican food, and Sausalito is home to some pretty incredible fish taco spots. Heck, we celebrated signing our mortgage documents with a dinner that included fish tacos (and other seafood dishes too)!

Sausalito is the traditional lands of the Graton Rancheria, Miwok, and Me-Wuk (Coast Miwok) peoples. With respect, I make a formal land acknowledgment, extending my appreciation to the past and present stewards of these lands. To learn more, I invite you to explore Native Land.

The Best Restaurants for Fish Tacos in Sausalito
Rather than rank these fish taco restaurants in Sausalito based on my own opinion, I’ve designed my own formula that takes into account three factors:
- public ratings (including my own, as I leave reviews on sites like Yelp, Google, and Facebook too)
- the restaurant’s popularity (total reviews)
- proximity to the Sausalito Ferry
These last two factors are “bonus” factors – they give you a sense of which restaurants are universally beloved and easy to reach if you’re visiting Sausalito.
In the end, each restaurant receives a score out of 5 – but a restaurant can score higher than five based on the bonuses for being close to the ferry and how popular it is. I break ties using the total number of reviews. In general, the higher the score, the better – and any restaurant above 5 has great fish tacos! Here is my ranked list of which restaurant offers the best fish tacos in Sausalito:
Rank (2023) | Restaurant | Score | Change (from 2022) |
---|---|---|---|
1 | Barrel House Tavern | 4.62 | – |

3 | Saylor’s Restaurant & Bar | 4.43 | ↓1 |
4 | Copita | 4.35 | – |
5 | The Trident | 4.09 | – |

1. Barrel House Tavern

Barrel House Tavern is one of those venues that does everything the right way: the food, the ambiance, and the customer experience. Perched right over the water, Barrel House Tavern is a local favorite, and their menu boasts one of the best fish tacos in Sausalito.
You can choose between their traditional fish tacos served at Happy Hour, with snapper, cabbage slaw, mango salsa, chili aioli; or their crispy tartare tacos, with ahi tuna or salmon tartare, Asian pears, avocado mousse, slaw, chile oil, Calabrian chile aioli, and soy lime vinaigrette.
2. Fish.

A restaurant named “Fish.” is a good omen for anyone looking to enjoy good seafood. The truth is that Fish. serves not only some of the best Sausalito fish tacos but some of the best seafood in the bayside town.
Currently, its menu offers the Fish Tacos Adobada, cooked street-taco style and marinated in guajillo pepper and pineapple. As for the fish, the chef uses the catch of the day and cooks it on a flat-top grill.
On a side note, the restaurant’s waterfront patio is sublime, with views of the bay and sailing boats that’ll make you question why you haven’t moved to Sausalito yet.
3. Saylor’s Restaurant & Bar

It shouldn’t surprise you to find mouthwatering fish tacos in Saylor’s Restaurant & Bar, one of Sausalito’s beloved Mexican restaurants.
Saylor’s Restaurant & Bar focuses on Cabo cuisine, and its chef has a recipe for fish tacos that will keep you coming back every time you visit Sausalito. Featuring fresh grilled snapper, shredded lettuce, and pico de Gallo, these fish tacos are perfectly balanced with just the right amount of kick. They also come with a side of Mexican rice and refried beans.
The menu also has Blackened Salmon Tacos and Baja Tacos (with Mahi-Mahi) for more fish-taco alternatives. By the way, rumor has it that Saylor’s serves the best Margarita in the Bay Area. So you know what to order while you wait for your tacos.
4. Copita

Set right in the heart of Sausalito, Copita has a well-deserved legion of fans who’ve made it a must-stop when they want to indulge in Mexican dishes. Unique and tasty in their own right, Copita’s Baja-style Cod tacos are among the best fish tacos in Sausalito. They come with battered cod, creamy avocado, wasabi and parmesan aioli, cabbage slaw, and micro shiso.
If you’re into spirits, Copita is an excellent place for Tequila tasting. Their menu has two pages devoted to an assortment of 100% Blue Agave tequilas you’ll hardly find anywhere else.
5. The Trident

The Trident is a safe bet if you’re looking for a fancier alternative for your colleagues or family to experience. Formerly owned by The Kingston Trio in the 60s, The Trident serves outstanding seafood, from lobster to ceviche.
The fish tacos on the menu come with Fresh Pacific Corvina sea bass, corn tortillas, avocado, mango salsa, and Fresno chile slaw. If weather permits, get a table on the outdoor patio, boasting gorgeous views of San Francisco, Bay Bridge, Treasure Island, and Alcatraz.
6. Salsalito Taco Shop

Last but not least, Salsalito Taco Shop is another excellent place where you can try some of the best Sausalito fish tacos. The restaurant is famous for giving its unique spin to traditional Mexican dishes.
Here, fish tacos feature lightly battered and fried Baja-style fish plus shredded cabbage, carrot, and freshly-made pico de gallo salsa. They also have shrimp tacos – they’re the same as fish tacos; just sub the shrimp for the fish. Another highlight of Salsalito is its extensive selection of drinks and veggie or vegan dishes.
